From Old Shed to New Polycrub – Isle of Raasay
At Caledon Contractors, our projects range from large-scale groundworks and infrastructure to smaller bespoke builds and property improvements. This recent project on the beautiful Isle of Raasay involved transforming an underused area by demolishing an old shed and replacing it with a purpose-built Polycrub.

The Project
Our client wanted to remove an ageing shed and make much better use of the space by creating a substantial, sheltered growing area.

A Polycrub was an ideal solution. Designed to provide a strong and protected growing environment, it is particularly well suited to the challenging weather conditions that can be experienced across the Highlands and Islands.

Our Process
1. Demolition & Site Clearance
The project began with the careful demolition and removal of the existing shed.
Once the old structure and associated materials had been cleared from the site, we were able to prepare the area for its new purpose.
2. Ground Preparation
As with any new structure, good preparation is key to achieving a long-lasting result.
The site was cleared and levelled, providing a suitable base for the new Polycrub and allowing us to establish its position within the garden.
3. Polycrub Construction
We then constructed the new Polycrub, including its timber base, curved framework and durable translucent covering.
Internally, timber framing and supports were installed to create a practical growing environment that the owners can adapt with planting areas, shelving and other features as required.
4. Finishing the Surrounding Area
Attention was also given to the area immediately surrounding the Polycrub, leaving the site ready for the next stage of landscaping and planting.
The result is a complete transformation from the old shed that previously occupied the space to a bright, useful structure that can be enjoyed for years to come.
